Planting Seeds: Critical Conversations

By |2024-10-14T10:49:02-06:00October 14th, 2024|Family Culture, Letters, Parenting, Relationship|

Throughout our parenting journey, one parenting tool that we have utilized the most is planting seeds.  While the generic concept of planting seeds is not new, our friends Dave and Lis provided us with a perspective that took the concept to a new level in our parenting with a 2 step approach: Planting seeds – Initiate a significant idea or topic with a question Cultivation – Ongoing conversation follow up This tool has been particularly helpful [...]

Making Love

By |2024-10-07T15:46:47-06:00October 7th, 2024|Letters, Marriage, Relationship|

Of course, when reading the phrase “making love” one’s mind goes to the act of sex, but as we all know we don’t need love to have sex. Making love is so much more than sex. And, in our assertion here, making love is a dynamic that enhances the family culture well beyond sex into all areas of marital and family life, with a resulting effect of increasing connectedness and intimacy. And, of course, this [...]

Don’t get THROUGH your homework – get FROM your homework

By |2024-09-22T15:07:07-06:00September 22nd, 2024|Family Culture, Letters, Parenting|

We hope you’ve picked up on a major theme from OneFamily – Family Identity. Family Identity takes ages to develop a decent working hypothesis and years and years after that to prove it out through countless scenarios. Homework is one such area that brings many family factors into play where Family Identity can be used positively and effectively. What does “the grade isn’t as important as the effort you put into it” actually mean to [...]

The Blessing of Grandma & Grandpa/Mom & Dad 2024

By |2024-09-09T08:05:36-06:00September 9th, 2024|Family Culture, Letters, Parenting, Relationship|

Sunday, September 8, 2024 was Grandparents Day.  Unfortunately, this special day usually passes each year with little notice.  Grandparents are blessing and should probably be honored more that we do.  Sometimes, we can let our own relationship with our parents affect their relationship with our children.  Here is a letter we posted previously that may provide you with some insights that you may or may not have considered in the Grandparent/Mom & Dad relationship dynamic. [...]

Team Good

By |2024-08-25T14:46:41-06:00August 25th, 2024|Parenting, Personal|

Football season is upon us. We’re Broncos fans here in our house, even though they’ve hardly been worth cheering for almost a decade. Nonetheless, they’re our team. We used to hate the Raiders, you know, football hate. Not that we genuinely celebrated injury to an opposing player or ill toward Raiders’ fans, but just normal football spirited team favoritism. The idea that children have an innate desire to be on a team is beyond dispute. [...]

Pursuing Excellence – The Difference Between Good and Great

By |2024-08-16T08:23:41-06:00August 16th, 2024|Letters, Parenting|

Perfection is an impossible standard.  Yet, in our results driven society, it's amazing how the pursuit of perfection continues to be coveted in almost every aspect of life even though it derails us in our pursuits.  The pursuit of perfection often leads to disappointment, shame, frustration, and feelings of failure.  However, pursuing excellence leads to accomplishment, confidence, contentment, and feelings of fulfillment.  This distinction was not only something we passed along in parenting our boys, [...]

Turning Failure into Success – Make your Bed!

By |2024-08-12T18:25:40-06:00August 12th, 2024|Parenting, Personal|

It started when Dano was in 2nd grade. Every morning, he’d lollygag and not be ready when it was time to go. Lis would continuously push him from one morning routine activity to another “Is your bed made?” “Are you done with breakfast?” “Is your backpack ready?” “Did you put your homework in your folder?” “Let’s go Daniel, we’re going to be late.” You’re supposed to hand off responsibility when a child is capable of [...]

Back to School & Back on Track

By |2024-08-05T11:29:20-06:00August 5th, 2024|Letters, Parenting|

Back to school has always been very similar to the start of a new year for our family.  It marks the beginning of a new school year with renewed expectations and resolutions not only for our boys, but also for us as parents. For the kids, it’s a great time to get them refocused on their schedules, routines and revisit some lessons that were learned or challenges faced in the previous school year and over [...]

The Key to a Daughter’s Heart

By |2024-07-26T12:26:33-06:00July 26th, 2024|Parenting, Personal|

Tissues required. 20 years ago, Dave gave a tiny little key held by a gold chain to our daughter when she turned 13. It was to mark that she was becoming a woman and was a key to the treasures of her heart. Dave told Shelli those many yesterday’s ago that he would give it to her for safekeeping but someday someone else would come along and claim it. That day arrived on July 20th. [...]
